Project overview:

Demonstration of Shallow-Water Mooring Components for FOWTs (ShallowFloat)

Awardee:

Principle Power, Inc.

Start Date:

Q3, 2021

Technical Challenge Area:

Floating Structure Engineering

Completion Date:

N/A (Currently Underway)

Synopsis:

ShallowFloat is investigating using the TFI SeaSpring, a non-linear polymer spring mooring component, to reduce the mooring costs for shallow water FOWT deployments. The technology will be advanced through mooring desgin work, open-source software development, and full-scale component testing.

Target Outcomes:

1
Receive an approval-in-principle (AIP) from ABS for a low-cost, shallow-water mooring solution incorporating the TFI SeaSpring.
2
Perform an LCOE assessment comparing mooring designs utilizing traditional mooring components with a mooring system incorporating the TFI SeaSpring.
3
Modify the open-source floating offshore wind modeling tool OpenFAST to allow modeling of non-linear mooring components.
