Project overview:

A Validated National Offshore Wind Resource Dataset with Uncertainty Quantification

Awardee:

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Start Date:

Q3, 2020

Technical Challenge Area:

Wind Resource and Site Characterization

Completion Date:

Q3, 2023

Synopsis:

In this project, NREL and its partners are committed to ensuring that the latest advancements in the atmospheric modeling community are provided to a wide range of stakeholders by creating the next-generation product for wind resource assessment across all United States offshore regions.

Target Outcomes:

1
Create and disseminate a 20-year atlas of the offshore wind resource for all US offshore waters, which will be available at no cost to the public.
2
Include modeling uncertainty information in the proposed dataset, including model sensitivity to the sea surface temperature product used to run the numerical simulations.
3
Publish a 1-year post-construction dataset, the longest dataset to date to assess the impacts of wind turbine and wind plant wakes in the offshore environment and its uncertainty quantification in the Mid-Atlantic region.
4
Design efforts to implement WRF capabilities to output turbulence intensity, an essential parameter for wake modeling.
