Project overview:

Design, Fabrication, and Pilot Testing of a Floating Construction Station for Domestic Manufacture, Assembly, Launch, and Retrieval of Floating Wind Turbines

Awardee:

Sperra

Start Date:

Q4, 2025

Technical Challenge Area:

Floating Structure Engineering

Completion Date:

N/A (Currently Underway)

Synopsis:

This project advances a modular, 3D-printed concrete Floating Construction Station to address U.S. offshore wind port and supply-chain bottlenecks. A 1:16-scale prototype will be demonstrated at the Port of Los Angeles, supporting scalable, non-proprietary manufacturing of floating foundations for 15-MW turbines.

Target Outcomes:

1
Demonstration of a 1:16-scale Floating Construction Station prototype validating modular construction, launch, and retrieval concepts.
2
A basis of design and technical roadmap for a full-scale system supporting 15-MW floating offshore wind foundations.
3
Shared, non-proprietary insights to accelerate U.S. floating wind manufacturing capacity using domestic concrete supply chains.
