Project overview:

Novel Fluid Film Bearing for Wind Turbines Main Bearing Application

Awardee:

Tufts University

Start Date:

Q3, 2024

Technical Challenge Area:

O&M and Safety

Completion Date:

N/A (Currently Underway)

Synopsis:

The objective of this project is to design, fabricate and test a prototype of a novel fluid film bearing (FBB) in replacement of current state-of-the-art roller element bearing (REB) that act as the main bearings for wind turbine drivetrain shafts.

Target Outcomes:

1
Quantify the values of proposed technology through accurate assessment of O&M cost benefits in collaboration with industry team members.
2
Develop a predictive analysis for assessing proper benefits in maintenance costs of the proposed technology including all sectors and aspects of O&M off-shore wind turbine operation.
3
Develop an R&D roadmap for further technical development relevant to drivetrain predictive maintenance.
