Project overview:

Offshore Wind Turbine Blade Monitoring Using Computer Vision and AI

Awardee:

University of Massachusetts Lowell

Start Date:

Q2, 2024

Technical Challenge Area:

O&M and Safety

Completion Date:

N/A (Currently Underway)

Synopsis:

This project will develop drone based inspection methods based on computer vision (CV) augmented with UAV and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies implemented to identify the location and severity of damage on offshore wind turbine blades.

Target Outcomes:

1
The technology will help wind farm owners/operators to i) streamline inspections and increase their frequency,
2
ii) reduce energy costs with limited-to-no need for service interruption, and
3
iii) alleviate the lack of inspectors available on the market.
