Project overview:

Verifying Offshore Wind Blade Integrity During Manufacture

Awardee:

Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Start Date:

Q3, 2022

Technical Challenge Area:

O&M and Safety

Completion Date:

N/A (Currently Underway)

Synopsis:

With the increased size, design, and complexity of offshore wind blades, this project will enable the development of an NDE strategy utilizing state-of-the-art technologies, and augmenting technologies like microwave (MW) and advanced ultrasonics (UT) to examine significant areas of wind turbine blades during the fabrication process.

Target Outcomes:

1
A set of offshore wind turbine blade test specimens with implanted flaws that represent the materials and configurations of key areas of interest for offshore wind turbine blades
2
Draft acceptance or quality standards that may be used for the inspection of wind turbine blades during fabrication/manufacturing
3
Developed, tested, and demonstrated flaw detection capabilities for use of advanced NDE techniques for the inspection of offshore wind turbine blades during fabrication/manufacturing with potential for field applications
4
Trial demonstrations of the advanced NDE techniques in situ to assess the techno-economic feasibility of integrating these inspection techniques into offshore wind turbine blade manufacturing and asset management
