Project overview:

Radar Based Wake Optimization of Offshore Wind Farms

Awardee:

GE Research

Start Date:

Q2, 2021

Technical Challenge Area:

O&M and Safety

Completion Date:

Q3, 2023

Synopsis:

Since wind farm wake control solutions are not yet mature for industrial applications, GE Research will develop wake characteristic algorithms based on radar measurement input data and perform a detailed design of a system architecture for park-wide radar-based wake steering.

Target Outcomes:

1
Implementation of embedded radar systems within offshore wind farms to directly measure wake properties.
2
Creation of new algorithms that continuously adapt wake models based on radar measurement input data.
3
Detailed design of a system architecture for park-wide radar-based wake steering, which includes optimizing the control of wake effects in wind farms to maximize energy production.
