Project overview:

Weld Assembly of Large Castings

Awardee:

GE Research

Start Date:

Q3, 2022

Technical Challenge Area:

Supply and Logistics

Completion Date:

N/A (Currently Underway)

Synopsis:

Develop and qualify a robust joining process for large-thickness iron castings. Once welding becomes mainstream, suppliers can split large castings into smaller sections, reducing costs through smaller batches, easier handling, efficient nesting, and improved quality control.

Target Outcomes:

1
Identify the qualification needs for welding castings and establishing the cost model to quantify the benefits of the proposed approach.
2
Evaluate the candidate welding processes and pursue comprehensive characterization. Down selection between the candidate process will be performed based on performance
3
Report on the final sub article weld process design and qualification study with conclusions on risks and rewards of the process
