Project overview:

Wind Farm Control and Layout Optimization for U.S. Offshore Wind Farms

Awardee:

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Start Date:

Q3, 2020

Technical Challenge Area:

Fixed Structure Engineering

Completion Date:

Q1, 2023

Synopsis:

In this project NREL will develop, validate computationally efficient wind farm modeling and optimization tools, and apply them to a detailed cost-benefit analysis of wind farm control for US offshore wind farms.

Target Outcomes:

1
Develop engineering models of offshore wind farms and calibrate them using SCADA data from commercial farms and large-eddy simulation strategies for a range of U.S. offshore locations.
2
Develop models of wind farms at 3 separate US offshore locations.
3
For each location, demonstrate coupling of wind farm controller design and layout optimizations and complete an analysis of the impact on energy production of these strategies for a range of U.S. offshore locations.
